You do look at porn, don’t you?

A recent attempt by scientists at the University of Montreal to study the views and attitudes held about sex by those men who regularly looked at pornography compared with those who never  had ran into problems very early on: -– as the Telegraph reported, the researchers were unable to find any men who had never looked at porn. “We started our research seeking men in their 20s who had never consumed pornography,” said Professor Simon Louis Lajeunesse. “We couldn’t find any”.

This doesn’t surprise me, particularly in modern Western societies where new technologies allow for porno on demand, 24-7. The ease of access to porn is supported by the study which showed that “around 90 per cent of consumption was on the internet, while 10 per cent of material came from video stores.”

Morphing into a more general examination of the porn viewing habits of young men, the study also found that “single men watched pornography for an average of 40 minutes, three times a week, while those in relationships watched it 1.7 times a week for around 20 minutes.”

The research also showed that:

  • men watched pornography that matched their own image of sexuality, and quickly discarded material they found offensive or distasteful.
  • pornography did not have a negative effect on men’s sexuality.
  • not one subject had a pathological sexuality — all of their sexual practices were quite conventional.
  • pornography hadn’t changed their perception of women or their relationships, which they all want to be as harmonious and fulfilling as possible.

  1. Um, not sure about the science behind this test. How many chaps did they survey? And 20 minutes nearly twice a week when they’re in relationships? Really? Obviously as a spinster I don’t have much to go on, but it does seem to be quite a bit for an average.

Also I’m intrigued that they did not find one gentleman with pathological sexuality, and have decided to state that stat. Given that according to their survey ALL men consume pornography, and there is such a thing as pathological sexuality, the Venn diagram would illustrate that ALL men with pathological sexuality watch pornography.
