Hey Hey! Now it’s the turn of the “little people”

Fresh in the face of an international media shitstorm over the Hey Hey, Reunion blackface skit (chronicled by us here at Hey Hey, What’s Racist) it seems Australia has managed to come up trumps again.

This time it’s the turn of “little people” and the inaugural running of the “Little Cup” at the Victoria Spring Carnival.

Before we examine at some reactions, let’s roll the tape. Apologies for the music, it was there already…

So is this just another storm in a teacup? Is there anyone offended here?

Not according to one dwarf entertainer who took part, Jeremy Hallam.

I think there was nothing wrong with it, it was all in good fun, it was just a bit of a laugh, a bit of entertainment, which is what we were there for. It wasn’t too over the top… I didn’t see it as degrading

Jeremy is planning on opening an entertainment company specialising in dwarves but, apparently, he has limits…

Definitely wouldn’t be tossed, definitely not, but apart from that as long as it’s professional and as long as I can see the funny side … rather than just taking the piss, then definitely.

Meredith Tripp, former president of the Short Statured People of Australia Association, has a different point of view…

Events that make fun of short statured people made it harder for them to go through life without being subject to ridicule. For a big corporate group seeing some sort of comical side to such an event is unfortunate.

And Victorian Racing Minster, Rob Hulls, sounds pretty fed up about it too…

At a time when racing should be fighting hard for that discretionary dollar and fighting hard to get young people back to the track, this type of event does nothing to promote the industry as vital, modern or innovative

So let’s have another poll and see where we stand on this one.

  1. Ah, Jeremy Hallam. I remember a while back he was in the news for a drinks promotion where he ran along the bar pouring Jager down people’s throats.

  5. […] Hey Hey! That’s Raci… Oh, actually maybe it’s not. Posted on January 6, 2010 by DrThrottling Last year there were a number of occasions when the Australian sense of “humour” raised hackles in the USA and led to a large amount of international media comment on endemic Australian racism. We blogged about a couple of those awkward humour moments in 2009, here at Hey Hey, What’s Racist? and later, about “dwarf racing” at Hey Hey, Now it’s the turn of the “Little People”.
